City of Prince Rupert outlines parking plan for Rogers Hometown Hockey event

With anticipation in the air for the arrival of the Rogers Hometown Hockey weekend, the City has made note of what will be challenging parking options for the community around the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre and Lester Centre for the Arts area over the course of this week, leading up to the Saturday and Sunday events.

The two facilities will certainly be the centre of attraction this week, first with the Charles Hays Secondary production of Freaky Friday from Thursday through Saturday at the Lester Centre, as well as for the set up for and then the big event of Rogers Hometown Hockey of the weekend, not to mention a Rampage home game on Saturday night.

Yesterday, with all of that in mind, the City outlined it's parking plan for the week ahead and for the most part, parking will be significantly limited from today at Noon through to Monday.

According to the outline provided by the City of Prince Rupert, there will only be a small area of parking available at the Civic Centre complex for those with accessibility concerns, with the remainder of the parking lot taken over for the Hometown Hockey Festival and Event activities.

The parking spots at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre/Earl Mah Aquatic Centre
will be few and far between this week as the Civic Centre parking lot
is transformed into the Hometown Hockey Festival Site

To alleviate some of the access to the Recreation Centre a shuttle bus process will be put in place for the Saturday and Sunday events at the Civic Centre, the shuttle which will be available for use from two locations will be by donation to the Salvation Army.

The two points for overflow parking and access to the shuttle will be Charles Hays Secondary parking lot and the vacant lot across from the Credit Union, with the bus stop across from Safeway as the designated pick up and drop off point.

A third parking option will be the Prince Rupert Middle School/Golf Course parking lot, though there is no shuttle service from that location.

And while the Lester Centre lot is available for parking this week, those who are using the Civic Centre are reminded that the Lester Centre lot is off limits for Thursday and Friday night, as well as Saturday afternoon to allow for those attending the Secondary School performances to have access to parking for that event.

Regular City Bus service will also be impacted by the set up and actual Hometown Hockey event, with the usual service to the Civic Centre now making use of the area at 9th West and McBride to be set up as the Civic Centre bus stop for the week, much as they do doing the Annual All Native Basketball Tournament.
