Extreme Cold temperatures, wind and icy conditions suspend skiing at Shames and Hudson Bay Mountain

While the sunshine may have made for the prospect of a good day for skiing inland, the Arctic Outflow that has settled over the North Coast had other ideas for the operators of Shames Mountain near Terrace and Hudson Bay Mountain in Smithers.

At 9 AM Sunday morning, Shames officials advised outdoors enthusiasts that owing to the extreme cold and icy conditions at the mountain that they would remain closed for skiing today.

The decision comes as the North Coast Inland region prepares for some hazardous temperatures over the next 48 hours with wind chill effects that bring the mercury down to  -33 overnight both tonight and Monday.

Shames Mountain was not alone when it comes to closures on the Day, Hudson Bay Mountain in Smithers who like Shames officials also advised their customers earlier today that they would not be opening this Sunday due to the extreme cold.

The closure for Sunday while understandable owing to safety, will be disappointing for the Northwest's ski and snowboard enthusiasts, with some heavy snow falling on the inland mountains through the last week, the Shames and Hudson Bay Mountain runs will be in fine shape once the weather conditions allow for a return to the slopes.
