Just a bit more shovelling Prince Rupert before you rest ... Weather advisories issued for those heading eastbound

A look at the downtown area this morning with more snow having
fallen in the overnight period

The overnight period has provided for some work for many this morning, with a fresh fall of snow filling in driveways and covering city streets over the last eight hours or so.

City crews and those of the Ministry of Highways were busy clearing the major thoroughfares early on this morning, for the most part keeping ahead of the accumulation.

Though as the snow became heaviest after six AM, some streets have made for challenges for some motorists, particularly a few of the hill areas, where those without snow tires or tires with little tread are learning some lessons on mobility this morning.

Over on the east side of the city, the main roads have been cleared
but side streets remain untouched for the most part

The City's focus for the most part is on keeping the main roads clear, with side streets, cul de sacs and such to be attended to as the opportunity presents itself.

The forecast is calling for a bit more snow this morning, then turning to rain, mixed with snow at times, total rainfall is expected to be 20 mm today and tonight, an additional 15 mm for Friday, with a high of 4.

For those who have storm drains near their property, keeping the catchment area clear may assist in draining some of the snow as the overnight fall begins to melt.

The start of next week will bring another change to our weather, with an Arctic Front set to take hold of the region through the week with daytime highs of -7 to -9 and lows down to -15

For updates on the weather see the Environment Canada website here.

If you're heading East bound, a Snowfall Warning has been issued for  the Terrace/Kitimat area, with up to 25 cm of snow anticipated between now and Friday afternoon.

For those travelling along Highway 16 this morning, the highway is listed as having compact snow, slippery sections as well as advisories for falling ice in some areas between Terrace and Prince Rupert.

Those conditions will continue to deteriorate as the oncoming weather system arrives and settles over the Skeena Valley through Friday and into Saturday.

Travellers can check ahead to see some of the conditions from the network of Highway cameras that is set up, with some good news this week in the return of cameras in the Terrace area, they had been out of commission for a number of weeks prior to the start of the New Year.
