Monday sailing of Northern Expedition Cancelled, as Special Weather Statement issued for Haida Gwaii

No Travel Monday, as BC Ferries cancels the Monday evening
sailing to Haida Gwaii from Prince Rupert

Anticipated adverse weather has given BC Ferries to cancel the Monday sailing of the Northern Expedition,  a move which will impact on the 10 PM Monday departure and the Tuesday AM return trip from Skidegate.

The cancellation notice was issued Sunday evening through the BC Ferries Service notices page.

Monday's cancellation is just the latest of a string of similar decisions as adverse weather has made for transportation challenges for the marine service.

The decision on Monday's sailing comes as indications of a strong wind event for Hecate Strait begin to shape up, with a Special Weather Statement issued for Haida Gwaii earlier this evening.

At its peak, the approaching system from the Southeast could bring winds of up to 100 km/h to areas around Haida Gwaii.

Update: Environment Canada issued a Wind Warning for Haida Gwaii in the early hours of Monday morning.

The Marine Forecast for Hecate Strait currently features a Storm Warning in effect, with winds increasing to Southeast 55 knots by Monday afternoon, seas will build to 4 metres by Monday evening.
