Prince Rupert RCMP seek public's assistance in shoplifting case file

Members at the Prince Rupert detachment of the RCMP
are looking for the help of the public on a May case file

The members of the Prince Rupert Detachment of the RCMP have called on the help of the public in identifying a male in relation to allegations of shoplifting at a local grocery store.

In their information release today, the local detachment notes of the case file which dates back to May of this year and provides a photo of the male in question on the file.

On May 26, 2022 at approximately 4:00 pm, the Prince Rupert RCMP received a report from Safeway that a man had left the store with a basket of items that were unpaid for.

The man proceeded to drive away in an older silver hatchback vehicle. Safeway video surveillance footage snapshots from the man as well as a picture of the vehicle he left in were provided to us as seen below.

"Sometimes, some members of the public can be reluctant to help with or be critical about requests to identify shoplifters, making the argument that they may not be able to afford groceries and need it to survive.

Whether it's the case or not, shoplifting is not the solution as it is a criminal offence. Resources in the community are in place to support those in need, such as the Salvation Army.

People may also not be aware that there is a black market for stolen high-end pieces of meat, fish and cheese, and some shoplifters and restaurants benefit from that."  -- Cst. Gabriel Gravel, Media Relations Officer with the Prince Rupert RCMP.

Should you have information about the man's identity you. are asked to call the Prince Rupert RCMP at 250-624-2136 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
