SD52 notes of seismic approvals, movie making experience from June meeting


The last regular Board of Education meeting for the 2021-2022 school year took place on June 20th, with SD52 officials recently releasing a short synopsis of their efforts for the wrap up to the year.

Among the items of interest, the Board received a presentation from a Grade 11 student who took part in the recent movie production 'The Island Between Tides' with Kellan Russell providing a glimpse into movie making from his time as Director's Assistant  on the project

The film crew putting in some extra attention to help the student learn many aspects of the production.

Something which Board Chair Kate Toye took note of:

“The Board could clearly see Kellan light up with his passion for this project. We hope this experience will be valuable as his capstone project for his graduation next year.”

Also from the June 20th session, the Board heard of the plans for the October 15th School Trustee elections, which take place at the same time as the provincial municipal elections.

As part of their work towards election time the SD52 Board approved their election bylaw, with the Secretary-Treasurer to serve as the Chief Election Officer and the Director of Finance to serve as Deputy Chief Election Officer.

To date, two current incumbents, Trustees Tina Last and Bart Kuntz have indicated they will not be running for re-election in the fall.

The key dates for the election process are available in the June 20th Agenda package, which has yet to be posted to the Agenda page on the SD52 website.

The Board of Education cals received the Climate Change Accountability Report, formerly known as the Carbon Neutral Action Report, they have plans to make it available on the School District website.

The Board also approved their schedule of School Fees and Deposits, including those for the Hockey Academy as part of the June 20th session. 


Two priority Major Capital Projects for 2022-23 were approved at the June 20th session, they included a Seismic Replacement Project for Prince Rupert Middle School, and a School Seismic project for Conrad Elementary.

SD52 officials also called Special July 8th Board meeting, though details as to what were to be discussed have not yet been made available through their Agenda Page.
