VIA Rail Strike averted with last minute negotiations

What could have been a bit of a blow to the reborn 2022 tourism season for the northwest has been avoided as representatives of VIA Rail and unions representing VIA Rail employees came to a labour agreement just as a strike deadline was nearing on Monday night.

The successful conclusion to the labour negotiations came in the early hours of Tuesday morning, with VIA Rail President and CEO Marin Landry noting in a statement  how resolution of the labour dispute removes the uncertainty that travellers were facing in recent days.

“VIA Rail is pleased to have negotiated these agreements and recognizes the hard work of both parties during this process. We sympathize with the passengers and communities whose plans have been impacted in the past couple of days due to the uncertainty caused by this potential strike. As we look forward to ratification, these tentative agreements allow our teams to get back to doing what we do best: serving Canadians throughout the country.”

In the update for travellers, VIA noted that the tentative agreements are still subject to a ratification vote by VIA Rail’s Unifor members. Once ratified, the collective agreements will be retroactive to January 1, 2022 and in effect through December 31, 2024.

No details of the agreement are expected to be revealed until ratification by members.

The last update from UNIFOR 4000 had noted of a 99.4 % strike mandate from its membership
