Blog Watching: Week ending September 11, 2022

Municipal politics dominated the first full week of September, with a nomination deadline for public office of Friday looming large, the week featured a range of political stories to put the focus on the election ahead.

Among the notes of interest, some nomination entries that were delivered by the deadline that could see some female candidates break the hold of the all male Prince Rupert Council come the October 15th vote.

Also making for what will be an entry into the Council election discussion, is a petition initiative launched on Friday towards scrapping the Port Tax Cap, an issue made current in recent months by  soon to be leaving office Councillor Blair Mirau and Mayor Lee Brain.

Speaking of the Mayor, Mr. Brain introduced his next career move this week, launching his e book on how to be a successful leader and politician and seemingly putting his services on the market for consultations.

Port Edward has put out the Help Wanted sign, that coming  after we relayed news of the departure for Vancouver Island of the District's CAO, Danielle Myles-Wilson.

It was back to school this week and as students return to their studies, a new tutorial program with a focus on reading has been introduced.

The top item of the week however was the weather, with the first atmospheric river situation  to launch the fall weather systems of much interest.

A challenge looms for the "Boys Club" on Third Avenue West -- As we worked our way towards the deadline for nominations for the 2022 Municipal election, some female candidate submitted their nomination papers. If successful on October 15th, the all male City Council of the last four years would be a thing of history books.  For a look at the full list of candidates as of the Friday 4 PM deadline see our archive page here.     (posted  September 8, 2022)

Port Edward CAO charts new course to the Cowichan Valley -- We started the week off with a note on a big loss for the District of Port Edward, but a major career move for a local government official. With Port Edward CAO Danielle Myles-Wilson off to work with the Cowichan Valley Regional District on Vancouver Island.  On Friday, we shared notes on the current Career Opportunity posting seeking to replace her.   (posted September 6, 2022) .

And while the news did not crack our list of Five, the news from Scotland of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday did make for some of the news narrative for the end of the week.
