Rainmakers on a roll after Day One of Provincials

The Charles Hays Rainmakers Senior Boys provided Exhibit A as to why their team is considered the favourite in the AA Boys Basketball Tournament in Langley this week, with the Makers' dominating much of the play in all four quarters  of play in a 119 to 45 victory over their opening round challenger from Sparwood.

Coaches Mel and Ryan Bishop made use of the starting five and bench through the game, interchanging players regularly providing for a fairly balanced amount of time on the court for all.

The result of it all was some solid distribution of the ball to many on the court through the four quarters of play and some valuable playing time for the bench who will find that early introduction to tournament play helpful as the next three days move forward.

The Rainmakers had 33 points in the first quarter and added another 38 in the second to take a 61 to 21 lead into the dressing room at the half, they continued on their pace in the third and fourth quarters with 29 more points in each ten minute frame, keeping the Sparwood squad at a safe distance and far removed from any thoughts of launching a comeback.

Leading the Charles Hays squad on the court on the day was Tyler Jones with 20 points, while Kai Leighton had 19 points and Liam McChesney put up sixteen on offence and had a strong defensive game as well, all of which contributed to the selection of McChesney as player of the game.

A cross section of Rainmakers filled out the remainder of the boxscore on the day ranging from a high of 15 to 2 points in contributions to the cause.

On the Sparwood side of the court, Tanner Barclay was the top scoring threat for the Rainmakers to defend, as he accounted for 24 of Sparwood's 45 points.

Game One Boxscore

The Rainmakers head towards Game 2 on the Championship side of the tournament with a 3 PM match up Thursday, against Westsyde from the Kamloops area, they advanced with a hard fought 59-54 victory over Brentwood College.

As the Charles Hays team continues its momentum into Friday Quarter Final play, they will find that more and more eyes are watching, as college or university scouts, as well as a number of other basketball observers drop in to see what all the buzz is about from the Northwest at this years tournament.

In AAA action the Caledonia Kermodes had a rough time of it in their tourney debut, the Keromdes and Prince George's Duchess Park were the AAA opener, with the Prince George team shutting down Caledonia by a score of 72-49, knocking the Kermodes hopes for a championship this year into the consolation round.

We will post the full boxscore to the above item once it is posted to the AA tournament site.
