Blog Watching: Week ending January 12, 2020

Industrial Development, the wintry weather, urban planning and the fate of CBC licences all caught the attention of our readers this week as we shook off the lethargy of the holiday season and moved well into the first month of the new decade.

Some news from Watson Island leads off our review this week, with our notes on some expansion plans for the Pembina LPG terminal generating some significant interest.

Planning for the future of Prince Rupert moves in house this year, with some changes in place at redesign Rupert which saw project manager Ceilidh Marlow moving on to new ventures, with the program seemingly now in the hands of the City's Economic Development Office.

Winter arrived with many alerts and road advisories, as well as some local notes for residents from Prince Rupert City Hall.

The architect of what has become Prince Rupert's dominant economic engine is moving along nicely with a new project, with former Port of Prince Rupert CEO and President Don Krusel working towards a 2024 finish date for a new container terminal in Quebec City.

And radio listeners in the Northwest have until mid February to get their views on the record as CBC Radio and Television comes up for licence renewals with the CRTC.

However, the most read story of the week put the focus on the soon to be operational Pembina LPG Terminal and what the plans for expansion of it will look like.

With First phase not even open yet: Pembina announces plans for expansion of Watson Island LPG terminal   -- With the opening of operations for the Pembina LPG Terminal at Watson Island only months away, the Alberta energy company outlined it already has some expansion plans in motion for the site.  An announcement which provided Prince Rupert Mayor Lee Brain to provide for his take on the nature of the Pembina news through his social media page on Facebook.   (posted  January 8 , 2020)

That article was followed by:

redesign Rupert morphs to Economic Development Office overview -- Just weeks after redesign Rupert played host to the Prince Rupert 2030 Vision reveal, there have been some changes made to the urban planning initiative, with the departure of project Manager Ceilidh Marlow and the city of Prince Rupert's Economic Development Office seemingly taking charge of the program.    (posted January 7 , 2020  )

City issues Snow/Ice Advisory for Prince Rupert streets -- Winter arrived on the North Coast with snow accumulating, melting and returning again through much of the week. All of it leading the City of Prince Rupert to make note of the work of city crews, as well as to highlight the responsibilities for home and business owners in the city.  (posted January 6, 2019)

Don Krusel's Second Act set for Spring 2024 debut in Québec City -- While Prince Rupert residents heard word this week of record shipments for the Port of Prince Rupert in 2019, we also took note of the work underway in Eastern Canada, where the architect of the Port of Prince Rupert's containerization footprint is making great strides for a similar facility for the capital city of Québec.      (posted January 9, 2020 )

Friends and Foes of the CBC weigh in as licence renewal consultation continues -- It's licence renewal time for Canada's national broadcaster as both Television and Radio licences will be the focus of CRTC deliberations in the Spring.  This month the focus is on consultation as Canadians deliver their comments to the Commission, with a deadline of mid February for contributions.   (posted  January 7, 2020)
