North Pacific Cannery To Do list includes work on roofing, electrical and plumbing items


Some extensive repair work is on the horizon for 
Port Edward's North Pacific Cannery Historical Site 


With one of the North Coast's top tourism destinations remaining closed to the public this summer due to COVID, some much needed renovation work is set to get underway, with the North Pacific Cannery Historical Site having put forward a Request for Proposals for a range of infrastructure work at the Port Edward site.

In their call for bids, the site which is operated by the District of Port Edward outliners that is looking for detailed estimates for material and labour for three of the items on the North Pacific To Do List.

Roofing interventions to the Main Cannery Building and First Nations Net Loft, Company office and Company Store. North Pacific officials note that sections of the metal roof have deteriorated or pulled away due to high winds and inclement weather, that has exposed parts of the interior of the heritage buildings.

Electrical remediation which will address a number of issues. With many oversized and underused transformers that are in service from when the site as operation as a working cannery, those same transformers are now drawing power from the grid that is not being used or distributed through out the site.  The work on the electrical component of the bid will focus on disconnection of power to the unneeded transformers and replacement with one main transformer to feed the site for its present tourism. museum use. There area also four to five existing wooden poles that need to be replaced or preserved.

A Plumbing element for the work includes intervention/replacement of the 70 year old cast iron water line that delivers grey water to the entire North Pacific Site.
