Blog Watching: Week ending September 12, 2021

The first week of the post-Labour Day weekend routine found a range of stories capturing the attention of our readers.

The five topics of note ranging from a seismic event that wasn't, to the city's ongoing water issues, the latest COVID data for the region, a look at the recent all candidates debate ahead of the September 20th federal election and some notes on some familiar faces now working for Global News

The review of five was topped off by a look at what would have been a significant earthquake for the region had the event actually taken place.

The city's ongoing troubles with its water supply gained renewed attention this week, that with a water advisory now in place for the west side of the city in the Graham/Atlin area.

This was debate week for Skeena-Bulkley valley candidates in the September 20th election vote, with five of six taking part in an event streamed live from Terrace.

Prince Rupert registered some positive news on COVID with only three new cases of the coronavirus to report this week, though concern continues over the results from Bulkley Valley and points east.

And a pair of former broadcasters from the Prince Rupert area have taken the next step in their careers, joining the staff of Global News in Vancouver.

However, the top item of interest for the week takes us the seismic graphs and the phantom quake of Bella Bella.

The BC coast earthquake that wasn't there ... USGS removes alert of BC seismic event for Monday afternoon -- Alarms sounded from apps and alerts came in on twitter  mid afternoon Monday, but with a lengthy silence to follow the original notice of a signifcant 6.5 magnitude earthquake just north of Bella Bella proved to be a false alert, one generated by a computer issue as things turned out.    (posted September 6, 2021)

That article was followed by:

West Side Water Advisory in place for Prince Rupert -- Some heavy rain stirred ups the turbidity at the City's Shawatlans Lake water supply, making for some problems for the west side of the city. Our follow up item on the topic, exploring some of the history of the recent water advisories also generated some strong interest as the week came to an end.   (posted  September 7, 2021)

Prince Rupert steadies at 3 in new cases of COVID, but Smithers surges to 45 in latest data -- The weekly review of data from the BC CDC provided some positive trends for the Prince Rupert area, but highlighted the concerns for Northern Health for the Bulkley Valley and points east.    (posted September 8 , 2021)

Skeena Bulkley Candidates don't stray too far from their election positioning in Tuesday debate -- Five of the six candidates for the Skeena-Bulkley Valley House of Commons seat engaged in a spirited, though rambling at times discussion of issues on Tuesday. The only absence on the night that of the Liberal's acclaimed candidate who has yet to make any kind go an appearance in the riding.   (posted September 8 , 2021)

A CFTK - TV -7 reunion on Vancouver's Global News   -- Readers seemingly have some fond memories of a pair of former TV 7 broadcast journalists, with a large readership found for our look at the move of Kamil Karamali and Christa Dao to Global News in Vancouver    (posted September 10, 2021)
