Blog Watching: Week ending March 3, 2019

Prince Rupert residents received the much anticipated financial forecast from the City of Prince Rupert this week and as Corinne Bomben delivered her slide show presentation at Monday's City Council session, residents heard word of a mix of increased spending and the first cut in the tax load for what has been a long number of years.

A few other notes from the Monday City Council session attracted a large audience of readers on the blog this week, with both our look at the presentation of the Select Standing Committee on council compensation and our notes on the city's plan to seek out funding for a renovation of the CN Rail building on the waterfront resonating with those who clicked on the blog this week.

A rather rare occurrence of both Northwest MLA's speaking to the same topic at the same time took place at the Legislature this week, as MLA Jennifer Rice and Skeena MLA Ellis Ross exchanged commentary on the recent funding announcement for Northwest communities.

Wrapping up our look at the list of five was a story from Friday, marking the latest of vehicle/pedestrian incidents in the city, that after a woman was struck by a van in the crosswalk at McBride and Sixth a spot directly adjacent to the city's RCMP detachment.

However the top story of the week brings us to the Chambers at City Hall last Monday evening and Finance Officer Corinne Bomben's Budget presentation for 2019.

Bomben's Budget Blue Print, Council comments both point to increased confidence in city's financial results -- The financial path ahead for Prince Rupert was delivered this week by Corinne Bomben, the City's Financial Officer. And with a tax cut and increase in spending in some areas the document captured the attention of many of our readers.    (posted February  28, 2019)

That article was followed by:

MLA's Rice and Ross exchange view on recent funding announcement for Northwest --  The announcement of a 100 million dollar funding program of mid February served as the theme of a rare back and forth discussion in the Legislature from the North Coast and Skeena MLA's.  (posted February 26 , 2019)

Dollars for Democracy: The hyperbole of Council salary recommendations  -- Along with the Budget review of Monday night, another item rose to the top of the attention list in Prince Rupert as council members and the Mayor heard a report from the Committee that had been put in place to offer up recommendations on compensation issues for the local politicians.      (posted March , 1 2019)

City to explore plan to move forward on renovation of CNR Heritage building on Waterfront --  Our preview of Monday's City Council session included a story that gained some early traction from residents, as readers explored our notes on the city's quest for funding for grant money to be used on the old CN Heritage building on the waterfront.     (posted  February 26, 2019)

McBride Street crosswalk incident sends one woman to hospital --  The week ended with something that has unfortunately become somewhat of  growing problem in the city, with another Prince Rupert resident struck by a car in a cross walk, this time at the corner of McBride and Sixth Avenue  which is located right beside the city's RCMP detachment. (posted March 1, 2019)
