Blog Watching: Week ending January 5, 2020

The first week of 2020 has made for a weather story for many residents of the Northwest, that as an atmospheric river and an arctic front collided above the North Coast making for a giant delivery of snowfall for the Terrace and Kitimat region on Friday carrying on into Saturday.

Week one for 2020 also provided for the release of the BC assessment notices and much like the levels of snow were high for Terrace and Kitimat, so too were the property assessments with some significant spikes found compared from last year.

For Prince Rupert the levels were much more modest, though it still will impact on a number of neighbourhoods around the city.

The New Year will offer a chance to learn more about the Port's Community Investment Fund, with an information meeting to be held next week for those that may have an interest in accessing those funding opportunities.

And the annual Polar Bear Swim launched the year, with our preview notes finding a large audience of interested potential swimmers.

However, the most read story of the week picked up the theme of the release of the annual BC Assessments and the wide range of increases found across the Northwest.

Six Prince Rupert neighbourhoods play host to top end Assessments for 2020 in the City --  The BC Assessment notices for 2020 were sent out this week, with homeowners across the province set to hear word of their property valuation from the provincial agency. For Kitimat residents it means a 41 percent jump from last year and a 20 percent increase for Terrace. Prince Rupert had a modest gain of 3 percent and from the numbers we tracked where the top end assessments can be found.  (posted  January 3, 2020)

That article was followed by:

Travel advisory issued for Highway 16 & 37 South between Terrace and Kitimat -- It's been a week for weather watching on the North Coast, with readers taking some strong interest in the notes we've offered up through the New Year's period. With Terrace receiving a significant level of snow at 60cm and counting, those readers who explored our notes of earlier in the week would have been tipped to the approaching snow event early.    (posted January 3, 2020  )

Recently introduced Shuttle Service to Terrace suspends operations  --  Only in service for a few months, a new highway bus service in the Northwest has been put on hold. There was little background released to the nature of the technical issues that have led to the temporary suspension of the SG shuttle service between Prince Rupert and the connections to the Terrace Airport and Skeena Mall. It's anticipated that the service will resume before the start of February      (posted December 30 , 2019)
