Rise of COVID cases makes for tough decision for Smithers Music Festival organizers

One of the most popular of music events in the Northwest won't be going ahead this year after all, with the Bulkley Valley Folk Music Society announcing the cancellation of the 2021 Midsummer Festival, the event had been scheduled for September 10th and 11th.

In a post to their Facebook page on Friday, Festival organizers outlined the details behind their decision as well as to how those who had purchased tickets to the event can access refunds.

More on the cancellation and the ticket refund program can be reviewed here.

The decision by the Smithers organization highlights the challenges that many northwest groups are facing as they try to return to more normal times, all while the COVID pandemic continues on with its twists and turns.

In recent weeks, the pace of new cases has been on the rise in the Northern Health Region, with officials announcing new measures last week in response to the increasing case count.

In addition to the release of the details of the new measures, health officials also continue to urge residents of the region to take in a number of vaccination clinics being held across the north to increase the level of vaccination in the Northern Health Authority.

  1. Unfortunate to have this event cancelled. But not surprising after my last trip to Smithers where I saw a number of mask-less people in Tim Hortons, Petro Canada.
