Prince Rupert Gang members facing a number of criminal charges following April attack

A violent incident dating back to April of this year on Fraser Street in Prince Rupert's Downtown core has seen the Crown Prosecutor approve a number of charges today.

An Information release from the Prince Rupert RCMP this afternoon outlines the scope of the incident and investigation related to the group known as the 'Crazy Indian Nomads' which according to the RCMP has been operating in the Prince Rupert region for some time.

"The group confronted the man on Fraser St. on the morning of the 22nd, where they chased him down and began to assault him.

One of the gang members can be seen in security footage, obtained by the Prince Rupert RCMP, as wielding a collapsible baton as a form of intimidation, as the others in the group punch and kick the man while he lay on the ground.

Another Crazy Indian Nomad is seen wearing "knuckle dusters", weighted gloves designed to protect the users hands from impact, and delivering several punches to the man while he attempts to defend himself.

Although the man declined to provide a statement and pursue charges, due to the nature of the incident the Prince Rupert RCMP forwarded charges against the Crazy Indian Nomad gang members to Crown Counsel."

As of this afternoon, the members who remain un-named and their numbers not disclosed, face six charges:

Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
Assault with a weapon
Assault
Fail to comply with a probation order
Fail to comply with a release order
Fail to comply with an undertaking

None of the charges have been proved in court yet. There was no timeline provided as to when those that have been charged will be facing the courts.

  1. A number of cities have implemented bylaws prohibiting the display of gang affiliated clothing.

Some people may view this as unconstitutional as it would infringe upon peoples right to free expression.

I remind those people that this group of individuals are identified by a group name, and associate with each other for criminal and unlawful purposes.

This resident urges council to begin drafting a "Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act/Bylaw so we can make this criminal organization feel unwelcome in our community.
