Prince Rupert's 2030 Vision plan an award winner for Planning Institute of British Columbia

July it seems is awards and convention season for municipal planners and civic officials and this week, the Planning Institute of British Columbia recognized the City's 2030 Vision plan, awarding the far ranging visual of the city's future a second place finish, with Prince Rupert gaining a Silver medal in the Excellence in Planning practice (Small Town and Rural Areas).

The City and its partners in the 2030 Vision Plan shared in the recognition, with CIVITAS and iPlan Planning and Development Services also hailed for their work on the plan which has become the blue print for the future and the subject of much of the Mayor's recent State of the City presentation.

CIVITAS is the Vancouver based urban design studio that partnered with acclaimed civic planner Larry Beasley and his associates who were instrumental in the crafting of the 2030 Vision plan.

The Prince Rupert project one that is a featured item on their prospectus at the moment.

iPlan Planning and Development is the contract planning group led by Rob Buchan that the City of Prince Rupert contracted out much of their planning work towards from 2020-2021

As the city's contract planner, he was instrumental in moving forward the vision plan and incorporating some of its elements into the newly created Official Community Plan and revision of many of the bylaws associated to local development.

Mr. Buchan subsequently was named City Manager for the city when Bob Long retired in the fall of 2021.

The First place finisher that edged out Prince Rupert for top honours was the City of Vernon, which gained recognition for its Climate Action work.

Many of the province's civic planners and civic officials are gathering in Whistler this week for a range of workshops and discussion sessions related to planning and the challenges ahead for municipal governments as they seek to create more livable spaces.

You can follow along with some of the activities  from the Elevation 2.0 website and twitter feed here.
