City Council expected to move Moresby Park Fuel Tank removal project forward tonight

Tank three of Moresby Park's fuel decommissioned fuel tanks will be in the
spotlight for Prince Rupert City Council tonight

A project that has been on the books for close to half a decade may get its final approval tonight, as Prince Rupert City Council reviews a report from Operations Manager Richard Pucci, highlighting the work ahead on the Moresby Park Fuel Tank removal project.

The Report to Council will trace some of the history of the tanks for Council members, as well as the work that the City has taken on to this point. That as they have attempted to find assistance towards the removal of the tanks that date back to the Second World War and have long since been decommissioned.

Since the late 1970's, the City of Prince Rupert (City) has been trying to obtain the assistance of the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Federal Government in decommissioning a number of World War Two large fuel storage tanks located in Moresby Park.

Although it is accepted that DND constructed theses tanks, the Federal Government has neglected any responsibility and claims that there was full disclosure of the inventory and condition of the site at the time of the sale.

As these tanks are over 70 years old, senior staff believe it is time that they are removed prior to any major release into the environment-- From a report on the Moresby Park Fuel Tanks from Operations Director Richard Pucci

Towards the more recent attempts to realize their removal, the City had an evaluation study conducted for them and from that study has received two bids for consideration for the removal of one of the Tanks Identified as Tank 3, located to the west of the apartments of the Anchor Inn building.

As part of Mr. Pucci's report, City Council will hear of the price for the contract of 720,000 dollars, as well as a request for the city to budget an additional 100,000 dollars for any potential and unforeseen issues during the scope of the work.

Council will also be asked to approve the awarding of the contract to a company called Sumas, which was recommended to the City as part of the evaluation process.

You can review the report to Council from Mr. Pucci from the City's Agenda for tonight's meeting starting at Page 60.
