Highway 16 Closure between Prince Rupert and Terrace owing to High Avalanche Risk

Highway 16 is closed until further Notice due to an
Avalanche risk between Prince Rupert and Terrace


Update: Drive BC has announced that the highway has reopened as of 8:40 PM

Travelling between Prince Rupert and Terrace is on hold this Friday night as officials from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure investigate a High Avalanche Risk along the highway between the two communities.

Drive BC announced the Closure of Highway 16 this early this evening owing to a High Avalanche risk along the route, with one area of Focus noted West of Exchamsiks, not far from where work was taking place on avalanche deposits for much of the week.

The Most recent notes on the situation came at 5:46 PM and were posted to the Drive BC website.

The next assessment update is to take place at 9PM this evening.

Heavy snow had been falling through most of the day in the North Coast Inland areas which were under a Heavy Snowfall warning through the day.

One note delivered to Drive BC following the road closure announcement called attention to some trees down near the Shames Road Turnoff near Terrace. 

Though other areas of are of note for assessment as well.
