Northwest Indigenous candidates gain higher profile as campaign heads towards homestretch

As the 2020 election campaign rolls on towards our date with the polling booth of October 24th, or a drop off into a mailbox near you, some attention is being made note of when it comes to the impressive list of Indigenous candidates vying for office across the Northwest, or those with strong ties to the region.

Indignews an online publication that focuses on the Okanagan and Vancouver Island regions has provided a thumbnail guide to ten Indigenous leaders who are looking to make an entry, or return to the Legislature following the October vote.

And among the ten, six of them are of note to the Northwest.

From the North Coast, the publication profiles Roy Jones Junior, who is contesting the election of behalf of the BC Liberals, also featured in the review, BC Liberal MLA Ellis Ross and NDP challenger Nicole Halbauer in Skeena, Gordon Sebastion running for the Liberals in Stikine and Anne Marie Sam who is running in Nechako Lakes.

NDP cabinet minister Melanie Mark who represents a Vancouver area riding but has strong attachments to the Northwest rounds out the six profiles of those who have a strong presence in the region.

If all the political stars were to line up, those contesting the four northwest seats in the Legislature could herald a significant change from the past for the area when the votes are counted in eleven days time.

You can review the profiles for each from the Indiginews website here.
