Release the Coho ... Oldfield Creek fish Hatchery host Prince Rupert and Lax Kw'alaams students for release event

From little salmonids mighty Coho may return ...
Last week saw the Oldfield Creek Hatchery host a
release party for local students

Last week offered some hands on experience for Prince Rupert and area school students with the Oldfield Creek Fish Hatchery hosting students and educators from local Prince Rupert Schools and as far away as the Coast Tsimshian Academy, they for the first time for the annual Coho release.

The session was one which provided some background to the annual release program, the opportunity to explore the hatchery and learn more about the cycles of fish in the region makes the Hatchery a popular place for youngsters through the school year and over summer vacation period.

For some of the students, the experience was the latest step in the education, having raised the coho Salmomids  and monitored them in classroom tanks up to release day.

The facility also shared some good news when it comes to their fundraising efforts for the rebuild of their water system, noting that Pinnacle Pellet Renewable Energy was the latest in corporate and community groups to step up and lend a financial hand, that with 1,500 donation towards the rebuild.

You can learn more about the Fish Hatchery and its operations through their Facebook page.

The Oldfield Creek Fish Hatchery is a volunteer driven, non-profit organization operated by the Prince Rupert Salmonid Enhancement Society and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
