Edge of the World, a documentary film from producers Charles Wilkinson and Tina Schliessler that provides a fascinating overview of life on Haida Gwaii is about to get some wide exposure, with the near two hour film now available for rent or purchase through the iTunes Store platform
The addition to the new releases section will bring additional exposure for the messages of Edge of the World and offer the film additional reach across Canada and beyond.
The film released in 2015 which we first took note of during its debut at the Vancouver Film Festival, explores a number of themes of both Haida Gwaii and the Haida Nation, with interviews and commentary from residents and how their values and history have continued to shape the way of life on the islands to this day.
Some of the elements of the documentary that are reviewed include the past theft of artifacts from the Island over the years, the controversy over logging and fishing practices of the past and present.
As well issues related to efforts to stop the prospect of oil tankers plying the waters of the Northwest and the work of the Haida to ensure that their voices are heard also make for a key segment of the film, which issues a call to action beyond the Islands.
Another focus for the film makers is how government and industry continues to treat the area as a resource to be depleted without any consideration of the impact on those that call Haida Gwaii their home.
In addition to the social messages of the film, the stunning visual images of Haida Gwaii dominate much of the film, providing a glimpse of the images that draw many to the islands.
The film is also available as a free viewing through the Knowledge Network portal which was also involved in the production of the documentary.
