6.2 magnitude earthquake rumbles along fault line between Haida Gwaii and Port Hardy

A sizeable 6.2 mg earthquake was recorded West-South West
of Bella Bella Wednesday night


The earth has shimmied under Queen Charlotte Sound this evening with a 6.2 magnitude earthquake recorded 170 kilometres West-SouthWest of Bella Bella, located in the sound between Haida Gwaii and Vancouver Island.

The quake was listed as striking at 9:30 Pacific time with a depth of 12.0 kilometres.

There have been no indications to this point, as to whether it was observed on the Central Coast, Haida Gwaii or Vancouver Island.

The area where tonight's quake was recorded has been a frequent spot for a range of temblors.

The centre of the seismic activity was 323 kilometres Southwest of Prince Rupert.

Emergency Info British Columbia has since advised that No Tsunami threat exists from this evening's quake.

According to Earthquakes Canada, the 6.2 quake was followed by a smaller aftershock of 4.0 in the same area, just before 11PM.

Update: Wednesday's twin temblors were followed by a  4.8 quake 292 kilometres Northeast of Prince Rupert off the coast of Alaska near Craig, which struck at 3:51 on July 4
