With return of School ... comes return of School Zone Speed enforcement

With the return to school today, motorists should be aware of reduced
speeds as they travel through school zones across the city

The first bells of the 2019-2020 school year will start to ring around 10 AM today and as you make that first day of School rush to make sure everyone makes it to school on time, be sure to take time to drive according to the School Zone posted speeds.

With the school year return today, the Prince Rupert RCMP will be keeping a watchful eye on the approach areas to local schools and should you creep over that posted speed, be prepared to face the consequences.

School zones across the city have a 30 km/h speed zone every school day, the speed limitations in effect from 8 AM to 5 PM, while playground areas have 30/km/h speeds from dawn to dusk through the year.

Penalties for failure to observe the speed in school zone and other school related driving regulations range from 167 to 253 dollars.

Motorists should also be aware that it is illegal for a vehicle travelling in the same or opposite direction as a stopped school bus to pass when its red lights are flashing.

Vehicles may not pass until the red lights are turned off and the stop signal arm is down.

As well there are rules for pedestrians crossing the street with the most important of them, that of making sure that you have made eye contact with the driver before crossing the road and to be cautious to look left and right before making your transit across the street.

Last week, SD52 Superintendent Irene LaPierre posted her Welcome Back to School letter for students, parents, teachers and staff, you can review it here.
