Prince Rupert Council approves development permit for Rupert Lawn and Garden's Seal Cove plans

With the demolition team having already done their work, there probably was no turning back anyways, but to make things official, Prince Rupert City Council on Monday evening approved the building permit application for work at the Seal Cove location for Rupert Lawn and Garden.

Prior to the presentation from the City Planner on Monday evening,  Councillor Blair Mirau stepped out of the chamber owing to his position with the Gitmaxmak'ay Nisga'a Society, the remaining council members then heard from Zeno Krekic on what is planned for the Seal Cove property.

Among his observations of note were that Rupert Wood and Steel which is the contractor that has been awarded the contract applied for the permit in August, noting as well that the Gitmaxmak'ay Nisga'a Society had secured a land lease from the City for an adjoining area to the existing site.

As for the new structure to come, Mr, Krekic observed how the new building would sit over the footprint of the current site, providing for a coffee shop, both of which the City planner noted would be a welcome addition to the Seal Cove region.

The prospect of improvement to the Seal Cove area was a theme picked up on by Councillor Barry Cunningham who noted that:

"I think it's a great asset and it's going to be nice down in Seal Cove, and especially if we develop other areas down there, I think it's a plus for the neighbourhood"

To bring the report and presentation to an end, Council voted to approve the Building permit.

With the old building now gone, Rupert Lawn and Garden have opened a pop up Shop in the downtown area directly across from City Hall, taking up the spot that once hosted Four Seasons Flowers.

The new building with its additional amenities is hoped to be completed by the Spring of next year.
